The Heritage of Witham
The town lies on the site of a Roman road from Colchester to London and excavations in the 1970s revealed the remains of a Roman temple in what is now the Ivy Chimneys area of the town.
Witham was also a centre for Essex’s wool trade, until the industry declined in the late 17th century, and also benefited from the discovery of some spring water in the 18th century by a Dr Taverner. This led to Witham becoming a spa town, attracting visitors from far and wide keen to drink the water and benefit from its supposed medicinal qualities.
Over the years Witham has benefited from excellent transport links with the rest of Essex and London. Witham railway station is among the top 150 busiest in the country, even though the town’s population is around 25,000. This is because many of the town’s residents commute into the capital on the Norwich to London Liverpool Street line.
The town grew rapidly in the latter part of the 20th century, with the then Greater London Council creating three new estates. Two shopping centres were also built in the town, the Grove and the Newlands, in the 1970s and 80s, to complement the existing High Street area.
Witham also has three industrial estates on its eastern side, close to the A12. Major employers include the financial services sector and manufacturing companies. In 2007 Crittall, who make steel-framed windows, provided major jobs boost when it opened a new head office and factory in the town.
The town offers plenty of attractions for the visitor as well as its residents. Witham has flourishing rugby, hockey and cricket clubs, and X Factor star Olly Murs has played for Witham Town Football Club. The active can also try the town’s River Walk, which runs along the banks of the River Brain and walkers can see plenty of different flora and fauna, and it offers the ideal location for a picnic.
