The Heritage of Romford
The name Romford first appears in the history books in the 12th century. Its name is believed to be a contraction of ‘roomy ford’ as a wide Roman road on the site crossed a stream and a settlement grew up around the spot. Romford now has a River Rom flowing underground through the town.
Romford owed its growth to its closeness to central London. Trade flourished due to the river, which is a tributary of the Thames, while the opening of Romford’s railway station brought more people and industry to the town.
In more recent years Romford has seen a big increase in its population, which now stands at well over 30,000 people. The town’s extensive commercial developments include a varied range of national chain stores and local independent stores, and the retail sector is continuing to grow. The town has a central business district close to the railway station where many of its major employers are located.
Romford also has a flourishing night-time economy and its own distinct music scene. There is a multiplex cinema and a number of nightclubs, pubs and cafes.
The historic Romford Market sells plants and clothing as well as fresh fish and vegetables. It has been in existence more than 800 years and stall-holders still gather every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday in the town centre to sell their goods.
Romford also has one of the only two remaining greyhound racing tracks in London. Golfers are well catered for, as they have a choice of three courses in and around the town. The town offers plenty of family-friendly fun, including rock wall climbing at Kids Space in the former brewery building on Waterloo Road.
