The Heritage of Maldon
The town is one of the oldest in the county, along with Colchester, and dates back as far as the 10th Century and Anglo-Saxon times. Its position, where the Chelmer and Blackwater rivers converge, meant it quickly became a significant Saxon trading port.
It is famous for the Battle of Maldon, when the Vikings defeated the Anglo-Saxons. However, the would-be Viking invaders were bought off in exchange for not occupying the town. Maldon has retained its strong maritime tradition, as many traditional Thames sailing barges are moored off the town’s Hythe Quay.
Another of the town’s claims to fame is the annual Mud Race, which sees hardy souls cross the Blackwater river bed at low tide in the spring, getting extremely wet and muddy but also raising lots of money for charity in the process.
A Thriving Town
Maldon lies 10 miles east of Essex’s county town of Chelmsford, and under 50 miles from Central London. There are more than 100 shops and businesses in the town, mostly on the High Street, serving a population of around 15,000 people.
The first Tesco supermarket opened here in 1956 – the nearest one is now in Fulbridge. The town’s retail offering is set to increase when the Blackwater retail park opens this year with major names, including Next, Sports Direct, Aldi and Costa Coffee, set to move in.
The Maldon district is also home to a wide range of manufacturing and high-tech businesses, as well as construction, agriculture and engineering companies. Maldon sea salt is well known all over the world and is still made in the town.
Tourism is also an important driver of both the district and the town’s economy. Tourism-related jobs account for one in 10 posts across the district and Maldon’s pubs and restaurants have an excellent reputation for hospitality.
