The Heritage of Brentwood
Brentwood’s name is believed to have come from the phrase ‘burnt wood’. In the 18th century the whole area was covered by the Forest of Essex – now Epping Forest – and the principal occupation of the time was charcoal burning.
The settlement grew because it was it was on the crossroads of the old Roman road from Colchester to London. As the road became busier, the number of inns increased as Brentwood became a major stop for stagecoaches.
The town also had a lot of human traffic because it was a popular route for pilgrims on their way to Canterbury. These days Brentwood is well served by a road network which includes the M25, A12 and A127.
The town now has a population of around 50,000 and although it is quite close to central London, it still has a rural feel, with plenty of trees and parks. Shenfield Common is under a mile away from the town centre.
Brentwood’s major employers include the Ford Motor Company, who have an HQ is in the suburb of Warley. The town is also home to other large national enterprises including BT, Canon and Countryside Properties, plus a number of financial services companies.
The reality TV show The Only Way is Essex has helped to put the town on the map, and there is now a TOWIE trail for fans of the series. Those people who prefer older, more historic culture can explore the narrow avenues off Brentwood High Street, and nearby Ingatestone Hall, a 16th Century stately home which Queen Elizabeth I visited on a number of occasions.
