About Moles

The European Mole (Talpa europea) is the only mole currently plaguing the lawns and grasslands of the British Isles. Although they look almost completely black in colour, their coats are actually many different shades of black to grey and silver. It is a popular misconception that the mole is blind. In fact, whilst their eyes are small and completely hidden by fur, they can still tell the difference between light and dark. A mole’s ears are small with no external flaps but their hearing is very acute, which is useful for detecting predators and other moles. Moles have a highly developed sense of smell and both male and female have a pair of scent glands under their skin, connected to their urinary duct, which they use to mark their territory. In the breeding season this helps to identify the sex of any mole occupying a territory. Fiercely territorial, the mole does not hibernate but works continuously throughout the year, feeding on insects and worms as it goes.

Their short tails are covered in sensory hairs, which also appear on and around the chin, the face and the back of the ears. When the mole is working the tail is held semi-erect to brush the tunnel walls, picking up the vibrations of anything passing above or below ground. These sensory organs around the head act as a radar to detect food sources and threats.

Moles are solitary mammals, sharing the main runs under hedges and fences, but defending their own territories aggressively. Their territories will, however, often overlap so that when one is vacated, through death or capture, it is very quickly taken over by another mole.

The life cycle of moles

The mole’s solitary behaviour extends to its mating habits also. Male and female will unite, once, for a few hours around February, parting soon afterwards. The female will then build a larger than average nest, called a fortress and it is here, that she will give birth to a litter of between 2-7 but usually 3-4. Breeding takes place once a year.

Two weeks after birth, the young moles will have a coating of fur and 8 days later their eyes will open. At 5 weeks the young are self-sufficient and getting ready to leave the fortress to find a home of their own. This is a dangerous time for the young moles, since they have to look for their new home by going above ground for the first time. They are sexually mature in the spring following birth.

The treatment of moles

A mole’s digging can seriously damage lawns and plant root systems, creating a series of unsightly holes in the lawn. Also, their tunnelling will undermine the structure of grasslands and paddocks making them a real risk to the safety of horses and other livestock.

Moles are usually treated through the use of tunnel traps but, where appropriate, we can use Phosphine gas.
